How to Read a 200 mg Proprietary Blend, Using Glyco Harmony as the Example
Quick answerA proprietary blend shows one total weight and lists its ingredients in order of weight under 21 CFR 101.36. Divide the total by an ingredient's place to get its ceiling. In the 200 mg Glyco Harmony blend, maca is at most 200 mg, gymnema 25 mg and L-carnitine 9.1 mg per ml. With 22 ingredients, the average is about 9 mg each.

What is a proprietary blend on a supplement label?
A proprietary blend is a set of ingredients grouped under one name and one total weight. The label names every ingredient in the set. It does not have to say how much of each one is there.
Glyco Harmony has one blend, printed as "Proprietary Blend 200 mg" per 1 ml serving. It holds 22 ingredients, from maca root at the top to L-carnitine at the bottom. Above it sits the only individual amount on the panel: chromium, 0.7 mcg.

What does 21 CFR 101.36 require for a blend?
The FDA rule for supplement labels is 21 CFR 101.36. For a blend, it asks for two things and leaves out a third (21 CFR 101.36).
The total weight
The label must show the combined weight of the whole blend per serving. For Glyco Harmony, that is 200 mg in each 1 ml dropper.
Order by weight
The ingredients must appear from the most by weight to the least. That rule is what makes the ceiling math possible.
What is not required
The label does not need to show each ingredient's weight. It also does not need to state extract strength, such as a ratio or a percent of an active compound.
How does the proprietary blend ceiling math work?
The ceiling math rests on one idea. Every ingredient above a given spot weighs at least as much as the one in that spot. So the Nth ingredient can weigh no more than the total divided by N.
A worked example
Take African mango, fourth in the list. Suppose it weighed 60 mg. Then the three ingredients above it would each weigh at least 60 mg too. That makes at least 240 mg, more than the 200 mg blend. So African mango must be 50 mg or less.
Find the blend total
Read the number on the blend line: 200 mg per 1 ml.
Number the ingredients
Count down the list: 1 for maca, 2 for grape seed, and so on to 22.
Divide
Divide 200 by each number. That is the ingredient's ceiling.
Read it as a maximum
The real amount can be anywhere below the ceiling, and is often lower.

What are the ceilings for all 22 Glyco Harmony blend ingredients?
Here is the math for every ingredient in the Glyco Harmony blend, in label order. The last column doubles each ceiling for people who take 2 droppers a day.

| 21. L-Tryptophan | 200 ÷ 21 | 9.5 mg | 19 mg |
| 22. L-Carnitine Base | 200 ÷ 22 | 9.1 mg | 18.2 mg |
What do 22 ingredients in 200 mg really mean?
Twenty-two ingredients sharing 200 mg leaves little room for each. If the blend were split evenly, each would get about 9 mg. It is not split evenly, because the list runs from heaviest to lightest.
The one floor you can calculate
The first ingredient must be at least the average, or it could not be the heaviest. So maca weighs at least 200 ÷ 22, about 9.1 mg, and at most 200 mg. No other ingredient has a floor you can work out.
One split that fits the label
Here is a made-up example. Maca 60 mg, grape seed 30 mg, guarana 20 mg, African mango 15 mg, and the other 18 ingredients sharing the last 75 mg. It keeps the order and adds up to 200 mg. Many other splits would fit just as well.
Extract strength is missing
Most blend items are extracts. The label does not say how concentrated they are. Even a known weight would not reveal the amount of active compounds.
How do the blend ceilings compare with study doses?
Set against the doses used in human studies, every ceiling falls short. The table compares the most each ingredient can be per dropper with the daily amounts trials used.
| Ingredient | Glyco Harmony ceiling per 1 ml | Daily dose in studies | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maca root extract | At most 200 mg | 1,500-3,000 mg (desire, not blood sugar) | (Gonzales et al., 2002) |
| African mango seed extract | At most 50 mg | 300 mg | (Ngondi et al., 2009) |
| Green tea leaf extract | At most 28.6 mg | 208-1,207 mg of catechins | (Liu et al., 2013) |
| Gymnema leaf extract | At most 25 mg | 400-600 mg | (Gaytán Martínez et al., 2021) |
| Panax ginseng (aerial) | At most 16.7 mg | 100-8,000 mg, mostly root | (Naseri et al., 2022) |
The whole 200 mg blend is smaller than one 400 mg gymnema dose. Our post on what gymnema and chromium research says looks at those trials in detail.
Why do brands use proprietary blends?
Brands say blends protect a formula from copycats, since exact amounts are never printed. That is a real business reason. The cost falls on buyers, who cannot match each ingredient to the research.
That is why our buyer's checklist gives fewer points to formulas that keep more inside a blend.
The case for blends
- Protects the recipe from copycats
- Legal under FDA rules
- Order by weight still gives useful ceilings
The cost to buyers
- Individual amounts stay private
- Hard to compare with study doses
- Extract strength often missing

How do you read any blend label in five steps?
The same method works on any supplement with a blend. Keep the bottle in hand and a pen nearby.
Find the blend line
Note its name and total weight per serving.
List and number the ingredients
Write them top to bottom in label order.
Work out each ceiling
Divide the total by each number.
Compare with study doses
Look up the daily dose used in trials for the ingredients you care about.
Ask the seller
Request the amounts and a lab certificate for your lot, and note the reply.
A neat label does not rule out a hidden drug. The FDA has found hidden drug ingredients in illegally sold diabetes products (FDA, illegally sold diabetes treatments). Buy from the authorized seller and read the safety notes before you start.
200 mg proprietary blend FAQ
What is a proprietary blend?
It is a group of ingredients shown under one name and one total weight. The label names each ingredient but does not show how much of each is inside.
Which rule covers proprietary blends?
The FDA rule is 21 CFR 101.36. It requires the blend's total weight and a list of its ingredients from most to least by weight.
How do I find the most an ingredient can weigh?
Divide the blend total by the ingredient's place in the list. The fourth ingredient in a 200 mg blend can weigh no more than 50 mg.
How much gymnema is in Glyco Harmony?
The exact amount is not published. Gymnema is eighth in a 200 mg blend, so it is at most 25 mg per dropper, or 50 mg at 2 droppers.
What is the average amount per ingredient in Glyco Harmony?
About 9 mg. The blend is 200 mg and holds 22 ingredients, and 200 divided by 22 is about 9.1 mg.
Can I work out the smallest amount of an ingredient?
Only for the first one. Maca must be at least 200 divided by 22, or about 9.1 mg. The others have no floor you can calculate.
Can I ask for the Glyco Harmony blend amounts?
You can ask the order desk at +1 (925) 231-0148. The amounts have not been published so far.
